 The London Skyride
This was an unexpected "Welcome and lets show you around" given the circumstances.
The mayor of London, who seems to be an advocate of cycling, has set up various events around London (and inspired elsewhere) to hold events where certain routes are closed off from traffic, making it a cyclists haven. The outcome on Sunday was 13,000 cyclists taking part on the 11 Km route around Ealing.
There are some roads that couldn't be closed off - in that case, they had extra traffic lights and people to hold traffic where they would usually be free to go.
Interesting - I went from cycling on my own around Cardiff to cycling with a horde of people on a rather nice route. Not to mention it made a great way to know the area a bit better, going down roads i've passed a few times wondering where they lead.
The route goes through various nearby parks, which are also used as super large pit stops for those who couldn't handle the almost entirely flat route. A local bike shop also set up a gazebo, and were there to fix people's bikes free of charge. Free drinks were available at each park too.
Apparently pictures speak a thousand words, so here's 1000 words of reading (attached).
